Which is best: petrol, diesel, or electric campervans?

Conducting some preliminary research before heading over to a campervan showroom? The team of expert engineers and designers at Landseer Leisure have all the camper know-how you could need.

Whether you’re searching for a clear answer to the question ‘should I buy a diesel campervan’ or you’d like to learn more about the benefits of electric campers, rest assured that we can help.

Are all campervans diesel?

No, while diesel is a common fuel for campervans, they can also be powered by petrol, electric, or a hybrid combination of diesel and electric. However, at Landseer Leisure, our new Ford Custom 2.0 camper is fitted with a 2.0L EcoBlue diesel engine.

Is a petrol, diesel, or electric camper right for you?

To help you determine whether a petrol, diesel, or electric campervan might be the right option for you, we highlight some of the benefits and potential drawbacks of each fuel type in more detail below.

Petrol

Petrol campervans not only have higher carbon dioxide emissions, but they also tend to be less fuel efficient than diesel vehicles, making them a more expensive option for longer journeys. As a result, petrol campervans are generally better suited to travellers that plan on making shorter journeys.

On the other hand, petrol does offer some potential savings as the cost of petrol is typically more affordable than diesel. Plus, these vehicles can be significantly cheaper to repair due to their simpler design and lower cost of parts.

Diesel

Diesel campervans are often a cost-effective option for high-mileage drivers as they benefit from higher miles per gallon (mpg) figures than the petrol engine alternative. This energy-efficiency also makes them a greener solution than the petrol, but they still emit greenhouse gases.

At Landseer Leisure, our latest model, the Ford Custom 2.0 campervan, has a diesel engine that’s fully compliant with Euro 6 emission standards, so you won’t have to worry about penalties from driving in a ULEZ (ultra low emission zone).

Electric

Quiet and relatively inexpensive to recharge, electric campervans have the added advantage of being a greener vehicle than both petrol and diesel-powered options because they produce zero carbon emissions.

However, these electric vehicles tend to be significantly more expensive than petrol or diesel alternatives. Plus, their limited range compared to fossil fuel vans makes them less practical for long journeys or off-grid adventures.

Landseer’s Ford Custom 2.0 campervan

As touched on above, our latest campervan, the Ford Custom 2.0, has been fitted with a diesel-powered engine – the 2.0L EcoBlue engine.

Succeeding the range of Duratorq diesel engines, the EcoBlue engines deliver greater fuel efficiency while also minimising CO2 and NOx emissions. As a result, this vehicle is Euro 6 compliant and therefore fully ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) compliant.

Also benefitting from auto stop-start and cruise control with convenient keyless entry, every element of this luxurious campervan has been carefully thought out by our experienced team of engineers and designers.
